After almost a decade of hard work and perseverance, the Peconic Estuary Program has begun construction of a permanent “rock ramp” style fishway at the Grangebel Park dam in the Peconic River.  This bypass channel will allow migratory fish, such as alewife and American eel to move freely between the Peconic Bay and 1.5 miles of critical river habitat above the dam in Riverhead.

Implementation of the $1 million project was in jeopardy late last year due to a $45,000 shortfall, but corporate sponsors, including Spectra Energy and National Grid, rescued the project at the last minute.  The project should be completed in the spring of 2010.   The Peconic Estuary Program is planning a press event for the spring of 2010.  Below are some pictures documenting the early construction progress.
