Brentwood TRIM Facility

In September 2007, Seatuck submitted comments to New York State in opposition to the Department of Transportation's plans to establish the Long Island Truck-to-Rail Intermodal (LITRIM) facility in Brentwood on land that was part of the former Pilgrim State Psychiatric Hospital. While expressing support for the establishment of such a facility on Long Island, Seatuck's comments highlighted the threat the facility would pose to important natural resources on the proposed site and at the neighboring Edgewood Oak-Brush Plains Preserve (Edgewood Preserve). Seatuck's written comments on the plan will be posted here soon.

Suffolk County Marsh Management

An outgrowth of Suffolk County's effort to adopt a long-term mosquito control plan was the recognition that the County needed a comprehensive plan to manage the 17,000 acres of salt marsh within its jurisdiction. In 2006, the County launched an effort to prepare and adopt a Wetlands Stewardship Strategy that would govern use, management and restoration of coastal wetlands. Seatuck has been an active participant in this process and will continue to work to ensure the strategy is influenced by the best available science.

Suffolk County Vector Control

In 2004 Suffolk County launched an effort to adopt a long-term mosquito control plan. The goal of the project was to provide a blueprint for controlling mosquitoes in a way that maximizes protection from mosquito-borne diseases while minimizing the human health and environmental risks associated with vector control techniques. Seatuck was an active participant in the process, submitting written and oral testimony and working with other local and regional conservation organizations to ensure the County's final plan did not pose an unnecessary risk to the environment. Seatuck's written comments on the plan will be posted here soon.
