The 2015 Seatuck Owl Prowl 5K, held on Saturday, October 31, exceeded even the most optimistic expectations. A sunny start to Halloween Day drew a large crowd of day-off registrants, which swelled the participant total to over 700 runners! The turn-out topped the past Owl Prowl high by nearly 100 runners! A bright, blue sky, the near-peak foliage of the 70-acre Scully Estate and the hundreds of costumed runners made for a spectacular, festive event.
Jen Dagan of Babylon claimed the overall women's title, setting a new course record of 17:37 in the process. She narrowly edged out two-time defending champion, Katie McGrath (17:52) of Oakdale, who was running in her sixth Owl Prowl. Babylon's Pam O'Sullivan was third in 19:03.
For as tight as the women's race was, the men's race was even closer! For the first time in Owl Prowl history, the top three runners entered the Scully Estate neck-in-neck to fight it out over the last quarter mile on the property's gravel driveway. In the end, they were separated by just 6 seconds, with East Islip's Jerry Pannuillo using his finishing speed to claim the victory in 16:51. Gregory Hayward of Farmingville was right behind in 16:54. And Irya Wilson - a student at Islip High School - was a close third in 16:57. Congratulations to the overall race medalists!
The Owl Prowk 5K was followed by the Monster Mash Dash, a kid's run that featured three heats for various age groups. More than a hundred costumed children lined up for the races and smiled their way through to the finish line. Their efforts were rewarded with an owl lollipop and a Monster Mash Dash finishers ribbon!
All participants were treated to a fantastic post-race spread that included breakfast burriots by Bubba's Burrito Bar and waffles, pancakes and sausages from Evergreen Island Caterers.
THANK YOU to all the race participants! We look forward to seeing you next Halloween!
